Note: This is my entry to R.O.X's Backpack for Bloggers I am an only girl, and that meant I would most likely grow up overprotected and have to abide by strict rules. No partying. Be home by 6. Participating in sports needed my parents’ approval, which felt quite limiting. I rarely got to go to far places, let alone stay out late at night. Academics was always the emphasis in our household, and playtime was usually very limited.
Fast forward 8 years – I have since graduated, and yet these rules are still prevalent in my life.
I felt the need for change, and try something totally different.
Like a caged bird eager to test her wings, I took flight and went on adventures. 2010 was a year of firsts. It was the first time I went on a trip with my friends and we ended up in Visayas. It marked the year of my first ever outdoor trip – tandem paragliding at Carmona, Cavite. 2010 was also the year I fell in love with a new sport – climbing. My Saturdays were then spent at Centro Atletico – wall climbing, belaying friends, learning techniques, and watching others in awe. I wanted to be like them someday.
And I knew I had just challenged myself to do so.
Challenge 1: The Start I first started climbing to shed off a few pounds and to get over my fear of heights. Doing so in an indoor facility was quite convenient. My passion for climbing developed because of the sense of accomplishment, and most importantly, the group of friends.

I never saw myself as someone who would travel to Cebu, Quezon or even Thailand to climb. Maybe I wasn’t so committed to it yet. I could not understand why one would endure pesky insects, the glaring heat of the sun, the grime and even dung. I had sworn that the indoors were just right for me to accomplish my goal.
Little did I know that on the last few days of December, seven months after I swore not to go on outdoor trips, I would be with some friends, riding a jeep to Wawa, Montalban.
Our destination was the Uling wall - a very long hike from our drop off point. My legs felt like lead five minutes into the trail, and my back was aching from the weight of my baggage. My friends were trying to slow down for my sake. It was embarrassing, and doubt began to settle in. As I was having second thoughts on why I tagged along in the first place, a majestic slab of grey rock came into view.
Challenge 2: Mars Attacks My climb was not an easy one. At first, I was afraid to let go of the rocks because I might fall. “Where should I put my foot? Should I let go of my hand and reach up?” I worked my way up, grunting, cursing, and screaming in frustration.

My friends coached, encouraged, and cheered. I had reached the top, and it was such a liberating feeling!
The sense of satisfaction was like nothing I had ever experienced. I had done it with my own strength. The exhilaration made me feel like I was on top of the world - definitely one of my happiest moments.
Challenge 3: Lunch We wanted to maximize our climbing time so we deferred going back to Aling Norma’s, where we were supposed to have our lunch. We shared a can of fruit salad and a couple of crackers instead.
Admittedly, I ate more because I was hungry. I would sneak a spoonful of salad while the others tried their luck on a more advanced wall called Iskaplam-plam. And luckily, my friends were understanding enough about my big appetite. (I just got teased.)
Challenge 4: Slash and Burn
We then headed to another wall and worked on Slash and Burn. Before climbing, my friends brought me to a ledge near the wall. Standing on the ledge, you can see the whole of Montalban. The sky was clearly blue and not gray. The clouds protected us from the harsh heat. There were lush greens everywhere, and I can see a stream was flowing somewhere. The mountains seem to engulf the place. Everything looked fresh and relaxing. You’d forget that the city and all its hustle and bustle is just an hour away. It was indeed breathtaking. Our measly mobile phone shots did not do justice to this place
The second climb was less scary because I already learned how rocks would feel on my hands and feet. The holds were rougher and smaller than the cool slippery ones in Mars Attacks, but the moves are more like the ones we do in the indoor gym. I was tired and still hungry but the feeling of wanting to reach the top was still burning in me. My hands were pumped but I slowly inched my way to the top. Going down the mountains, I realized that it is not just the physical satisfaction of reaching the top that made outdoor climbing worth my while. The process of climbing itself – knowing where to put your hands and your feet, trying to pull yourself up, or standing on small rocks, even slipping and falling – these things make climbing even more fun, challenging and fulfilling. It was a different level of contentment that I cannot explain or compare when I reached the peak.
Back in Centro Atletico, I now have more motivation to climb indoors. I want to be better so that when I go back to Montalban, I can climb other walls. I now want to travel to Cebu, Quezon or even Thailand to climb. Yes, there may be no comfort rooms in the outdoors. There may be huge insects, and sometimes the outdoors smell, too.
But now, I want to do it.

Thanks, Evert This has been circulating around the Internet for a while now. Read half of it in Facebook courtesy of Junie. This post seems apt since it's nearing Valentine's Day!
"Ang pag-ibig parang imburnal...nakakatakot mahulog...at kapag nahulog ka, it's either by accident or talagang tanga ka." 22. Heartbroken
You see a couple holding hands while strolling, and you suddenly feel a pang of sadness inside. If it were a couple of weeks ago, you would have not noticed those sweethearts, because you were too busy holding your partner's hand and staring at those lovely eyes. Now, you are just another member of the Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club, harboring all the bitter feelings whenever you see someone else happy with their beloved.
Your idea of February 14 is being alone in your room, belting out the most heart-wrenching songs with your mp3 player, feasting on chips and a bottle or two of vodka at hand,. Or if you are a non-alcoholic, you will be splurging on comfort food: greasy greasy pizza, burgers, chocolates, a gallon of your favorite ice cream. Looks like you will be painting the perfect picture of misery. *Hug*Lorelai Gilmore once said that you need to wallow after a break-up. If playing the saddest songs in your MP3 player or crying your heart out as you watch Titanic is your idea of wallowing, then so be it. We hear that misery loves company, so Evert's Desserts has also come up with the perfect cheer-me-up treat: Liqueur Fudge! Drown your sorrows away with your ultimate comfort food: chocolate mixed with the perfect kick of alcohol! To shove away your sorrow, in fudge cookies you wallow! Prices Peppermint Walnut Fudge: Php 150/10 pcs. Cherry Fudge: Php 150/10 pcs. PS: Some unsolicited advice: Please stay away from blades, knives, glass shards, ropes, guns and other harmful devices on your wallowing period. =) Photo Credit: Arlo Vicencio: http://arluga.multiply.com Roget Callueng: http://rogetphotos.multiply.com Tagline Credit: Derrick Ong Single and Happy Weekdays are for work, and weekends are spent with different groups of friends and of course, with the family. You may go on one date to another, non-exclusive, of course. You are not really looking for a special someone, just waiting to fall in love with The One. After all, one should enjoy being single, focus on the careers, do a little bit of flirting here and there, and love, when the right time comes, will eventually happen.
Nothing special is planned this Valentine's Day. There is no need to feel mushy, and no need to plan something extraordinarily romantic. You'll probably go partying with friends, but that is just the same as any ordinary weekend.
Who says Valentine's Day is not for you?
Indulge on Amaretto Dark Chocolates this Valentine's Day! Kept in a heart-shaped can, "spread the love" (as one of my customers call it) on February 14 to your friends, family, and relatives. Be the one who makes them feel loved on Valentine's Day! You need not have that special spark, have a bite of Amaretto Dark!
